BLOG CLOSED

Well, we are at the end of the line. After many trials and tribulations, hinderences and hiccups we ended up making a sequence that wasn't half bad. This does, however, mean this is the last post on this blog and therefore it is closed and no longer in business.

We held our screening yesterday and it went down a treat :)
We got the audience to fill in a questionnaire and here are some mathematical representations on our results (Some of the percentages they add up to below 100% due to rounding) ;

17 - 44%

Male - 41%
Female - 59%

8 - 36%
9 - 41%
10 - 9%
Average : 8.45

As well as these results some trends were recognised in the questions about what the audience liked and disliked;

What did you like;
The top few elements of our sequence that were mentioned were the music, atmosphere, camera work, lighting and titles. Particularly in regards to the lighting and atmosphere this is a result we wished to achieve being that they were two key aspects of our sequence.

What didn't you like;
The two main points raised were that the sequence felt too slow and that there was a certain element of confusion from the sequence. The latter of the points can be classed as both a positive and negative, as we always aimed by the ending shot to leave a feeling of suspense and enigma. I think that by "confusion" the audience were aware of what was happening in the sequence but wanted to know the motives behind it. Other points raised were the lack of dialogue and the plot line (which i think can link with the confusion point).

Test Screening

Today we had our first test screening on the big screen. We got some of our fellow classmates in to look through for any small details that could be wrong including continuity errors, lack of understanding, sound problems and general problems with titles and fonts.

Generally everything went well, there were a few titles in wrong places which we sorted out promptly afterwards and Mrs Thrasher noted that the POV shot before the killing could be slightly shorter at the start to build tension quicker.

We were very happy with the general feedback we received and can now rather safely say we are near to completion.

New Company Name and Logo

After deciding that our previous company name and logo did not suit the mood or theme of our film we decided to brainstorm a new one. After some deliberation we chose the name 'Eyeless Productions' because we felt it was a more sinister and threatening name than Shazam!. We thought that this was to much like a comic book film company and didn't follow with the thriller/horror nature of the company and the productions it makes. We have chosen to make our logo black and white with touch of grey as it suits the titles in our sequence. The yellow of the previous logo stood out more and gave over the wrong impression of the mood trying to be presented.

Chopping and Changing

Following up on Ms. Blackborow's feedback, several cuts have been made to shorten our piece. As a result, the sequence is currently 20 seconds shorter than it was yesterday. The sound of the doorbell has been removed, resulting in a more effective opening, which sounds less cheesy and makes more sense, seeing as the attacker is already in the house. The sequence has been tightened, removing frames to cut down the length.
We've also changed the font of the titles to make them less horror- like, and our company has had a changed of identity. Shazam! Productions is no more, and has been replaced with the infinitely more sombre and reserved Eyeless Productions, complete with an actually decent logo.

Soundtrack

Today's labours of love also included the creation of a soundtrack (at last). Finally finding some suitably moody and atmospheric music, we swiftly added it to the sequence. By chance, the music fits the first half of the sequence perfectly, giving a tense at dramatic feel which culminated in the action scene where the killer strikes. However, this was when the music came to an end, so we added a second short piece to cover the second half of the sequence, slowing it down to elongate it to reaching the end of the opening. The two musical items are very similar, and the second one follows on from the first very naturally. Also added was a gunshot at the very end of the piece. This effect is loud, sudden and dramatic, exactly the feel we wanted. People that have seen it so far have been suitably shocked at the ending. We've also been looking at enhancing the slamming of the detective's head into the desk.
